ABSTRACT Since the early days of internationalization, business research theorists have been arguing, that firms can achieve substantial benefits by expanding into foreign countries. Firms can internationalize in many ways, through exporting, licensing and foreign direct investment, i.e. joint ventures or wholly owned subsidiaries. These so-called“mode”choices of firms are affected by a number of determinants, i.e. economic determinants such as the ownership advantages of the firm, the location advantages of the country and the benefits of internalisation. Also institutional determinants and isomorphic pressures affect the modal choices of firms. Some of the external institutions that have an effect on the organizational decisions and behaviors of firms are the modal choices of competitors. Internal institutions that put isomorphic pressure on modal choice decisions are the subsidiaries of the firm situated in different environments and parent firms decisions. The present research analizes the influence of economic and institutional determinants on the modal choice decisions of German firms in Turkey at two different points in time, 1995 and 2003; as well as the extent to which structural inertia influences the modal change decisions of these firms. Thirteen hypotheses are formulated to understand the dependencies and relationships between these variables and the mode decisions of the firms and the hypotheses are tested. The results of the research show, that modal decisions are taken under the influence of ownership and location advantages as well as external isomorphic pressures by competitors; however, that on the other hand modal change decisions are affected primarily by ownership advantages and internalization related incentives.
