SUMMARY The main objective of this study is to examine the interdepen dence of the structure of the economy of East Marmara by using a regional input - output model. Emphasis has been put oil the main economic activities, found in the region. More spesifically, the obj ectives of the study are : 1 - To formulate a regional input - output model in order to study the interrelationship of the economy. 2 - To measure the direct and indirect effects of a change found in the economic activities. 3 - To compute output multiplier The emprical results are intended to illustrate the structure of the Eeast Marmara's economy so that leaders in agriculture, business, and government an evaluate various proposed economic development programs. The data used in the study for the year 1%3, due to secondary data for this year, were the most complete of all the available data. Secondary data were used because of the collection of primary data where regional data were not available in the necessary from. Those abtained from national input - output model were adjusted where these were necessary in the light of the relavent information applicable to the economy of the region. The Basic Approach of the Study : In the preparation of the East Marmara flow table, the first step was to obtain a monetary control total for the gross output of each sector. In some cases, sufficient data have been found for the available direct estimation of gross output : in other cases where data on output were scarce, indirect estimating procedures were used. 68Secondly, the national input coefficient applied to the East Marmara region, has been considered. The the East Marmara gross output estimates multiplied by these national input coefficients completed the each sector's column..Thus the body of the table was filled in column by column in this way. The estimation of the final demand sector's required somewhat a different treatment. Household expenditures were estimated by using the results of the survey of consumer expenditures in Istan bul and Bursa. State and local government revenues and expen ditures were obtained from the data of the finance department ot the government. Finally, I summed the distributions of each row. The sum thus derived can be compared with the original estimation of the regional output for the industry. The difference between the two shows the regional balance : a positive value indicates that the region is a net exporter, in the case of negative value, a net im porter. The Content of the Chapters : First and second chapters deal with the theoretical basis of the analysis. Of course, the intention here is to explain the input - out - put model by means of an example and, to give mathematical statement of the most accepted open static model. These chapters will show how an input - output model can be used to depict the structural interdependence, and to evaluate the effects of an indu ced change will have on the economy. In the third chapter, I have only touched upon the major developments, and refered primarily to those studies which have contributed something new to the development of regional and interregional input - out - put theory or to the empirical implemen tation of input - output models. In the fourth and fifth chapters I intend to present a quanti tative study of the economy of East Marmara, covering the cities, of Istanbul, Bursa, Kocaeli and Sakarya. Finaly, I have briefly dis cussed the basic economic characteristics of the regional economy and I presented the input - output table. Then I analysed the struc ture of the economy based on this table. 69
