SECOND LAW ANALYSIS OF MARINE DIESEL ENGINES AND ENTROPY GENERATION SUMMARY The performance optimization of today's sophisticated engine systems has become an exercise in maximizing performance while operating under a significant number of constraints. These engine constraints relate to exhaust emissions, structural load limits, starting capability, response, performance capabilities, thermal loading and a series of other minor configuration concerns. In such a complex situation one must employ an understandable and systematic methodology to rationally pursue an optimization. One such approach, which identifies and quantifies the engine thermodynamic losses, is second law analysis. Traditional first law approaches for evaluating engine power plant performance do not explicitly call attention to those processes within the engine system which cause unrecoverable degradation to the thermodynamic state of the working fluid. The use of second law based analysis along with the typical first law analysis provides the capability to identify and catalog those processes which cause thermodynamic state degradation. The engine developer can then determine the cause and effect relationships which alter those processes and work toward overall loss reduction. In this work, second law analysis has been performed for a marine diesel engine; entropy generation in cylinders has been calculated and observed with the changing values of different parameters such as speed, intake manifold pressure and temperature, compression ratio etc. The previous studies related to the analysis based on The Second Law of Thermodynamics have been reported in Chapter 2 and second law analysis has been used for a dual cycle diesel engine to determine the lost available work in Chapter 3. A computer software program has been used which simulates the time-dependent flow during the intake and exhaust phases at the turbocharger, intake and exhaust manifolds and the cylinders based on a“non-homentropic flow model”(Chapter 6). The theory of modelling has been maintained in Chapter 4 and cylinder boundary condition which is very important from the point of second law analysis has been explained widely in Chapter 5. The theoretical results of the studies on the selected engine which is described in Chapter 7 have been presented in Chapter 8 and appendixes. xn
