Özet
ÖZET Bu çalışmanın amacı Thomas Hardy'nin romanlarındaki mitolojik unsurları mitolojik yaklaşım doğrultusunda incelemektir. Bu çalışma, Hardy'nin The Return of the Native, The Woodlanders, ve Jude the Obscure adh romanlanyla sınırlandırılmıştır. Giriş Bölümünde çalışmanın amacı ve izlenilen yöntem ve izlekler hakkında bilgi verilir. Ayrıca Giriş Bölümünde Hardy'nin trajik anlayışı, mitolojik unsurları kullanımı, ve romanlarını yazdığı dönemin kültürel yapısı irdelenir. Birinci Bölümde edebiyatta mitoloji ve mitolojik yaklaşım ele alınır, insanlığın evrensel durumunu ve insan doğasını irdelemede önemli bir araç olan Mitolojik Yaklaşım edebi eserlere estetik, antropolojik, kültürel ve psikolojik açılardan yaklaşarak zengin bir inceleme sunmaktadır. İkinci, Üçüncü ve Dördüncü Bölümlerde sırasıyla The Return of the Native, The Woodlanders, ve Jude the Obscure adlı romanlardaki mitolojik unsurlar Hardy'nin trajik anlayışı bağlamında ayrıntılı olarak incelenir. Hardy'nin mitolojik unsurları kullanımı trajik bakış açısını oluşturan 'mitik' -'modern' zıtlığı", ruh-beden ikilemi, ve Helen-Hıristiyan çatışması temaları çerçevesinde incelenir. Hardy'nin modern yaşam ile antik yaşam arasında paralelliğin yanı sıra zıtlık da görerek romanlarında mitleri hem gerçek anlamda hem de ironik olarak kullandığı görülmüştür. Hardy'nin karakterlerinin psikolojisini ve durumunu irdelerken arketiplerden de yararlandığı gözlemlenmiştir. Mitolojik Yaklaşım da Hardy'nin romanlarının çok yönlü anlamını ortaya koymada yardımcı olmuştur. Bu çalışma, Hardy'nin mitoloji kullanımının başlıca temalar bağlamında toplu bir değerlendirilmesiyle son bulur. 103

ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to analyse the function of mythological elements in Thomas Hardy's novels, by mythological approach. This study focuses on the three novels by Hardy entitled The Return of the Native, The Woodlanders, and Jude the Obscure. The Introduction presents the aim of the study, and the method and the themes relied upon nvthis study. It also deals with Hardy's tragic vision, his use of mythological elements, and the cultural milieu of the period in which he wrote his novels. Part One deals with the use of mythology in literature and the mythological approach. Being an important tool in exploring the universal human condition and human nature, myth criticism provides a rich analysis by approaching works of literature from aesthetic, anthropological, cultural, and psychological aspects. Part Two, Part Three, and Part Four analyses in detail the function of mythological elements with a view to Hardy's tragic vision in The Return of the Native, The Woodlanders, and Jude the Obscure, respectively. Hardy's utilization of mythological elements is explored in relation to such themes as the ' mythic' - 'modern' contrast, flesh-spirit dichotomy, and the conflict between Hellenism and Hebraism, which constitute integral parts of his tragic vision. It is seen that Hardy uses myths in his novels both literally and ironically to explore human nature and human plight, as he sees both a parallel and a contrast between the antiquity and the modern life. It is observed that Hardy also makes use of archetypes in exploring the psychology and the condition of his characters. And, the mythological approach helps reveal the multi-layered meaning of Hardy's novels. This study concludes with a brief evaluation of Hardy's use of myth in relation to his major themes. 102
