325 SUMMARY Ünal, Asife, An Analysis of Understanding of Covering Head. As Prevailed in Turkey, An Approach From The Angle of The History of Religion. Doctoral Dissertation, Advisor: Prof. Dr. Abdurrahman Küçük. The subject matter of this work is to point out various interpretations about the necessity of women's head cover according to the Religious that have followers in modern Turkey. The Introductory chapter deals, in brief, with the historical background of cover in the light of the Religious concerned. The thesis consists of three chapters. In the first chapter, understanding of women's head cover by the Jews living in Turkey is dealt with by giving special reference to the historical process of understanding the matter by various Jewish communities existing among the Jews. It has been reached that covering of women's head is understood to be a salient characteristics of women's chastity; however, the practise has almost been seen as an act to be done during the process of worship. The matter, on the other hand, of men's covering their heads has particularly been practised by the Jews as an important sign for the reflection of their love and respect towards God. In Chapter II, the subject matter is dealt with, as understood by Christian communities living in Turkey. It has been reached that women's head cover symbolizes women's dependence to men and has been seen as a religious necessity; however it has also been pointed out that this practise has come to be seen, in modern Christian Societies as a special requirement only for Nuns. Amongst certain Christian Communities of Turkey, particularly during the sermons in the Church and for the sermons of communion, the matter has been given particular observance. In Chapter III, the subject matter is dealt with as viewed by the Muslims of Turkey. It has been understood that the issue has been identified with the protection of chastity and a salient sign of freedom and virtue that differentiates326 those with foil freedom from the slaves; and by such differentation free women have been expected to be shielded from any possible sexual harassment and likewise. Although it has been interpreted differently by various societies women have, generally, been covering their heads in Muslim Societies; as it has been the case among Turkish Muslim Societies; however, it has been seen that in contemporary Turkish Societies this matter has not been enjoying prevalent practise as it used to be. As a conclusion it has been reached that the matter under scruting has been existent since the existance of the first human societies; and it does not belong, as a salient characteristics, to any particular one of these three divine religious; and it has been differently practised by various societies which have different culture, locality, religious belief and understanding, climate, fashion and personal taste; thereby, we put forward as a conclusion that the matter in question ought not to be seen as one of those principal commands of the Religious concerned, (i.e. Judaism, Christianity and Islam)
