Özet
KISA ÖZET Şiir çevirisi, özellikle de kapalı/zor şiirlerin çevirisi, çevirmenler tarafından - hatta şair-çevirmenler tarafından dahi - hafife alınmayacak bir girişim olarak nitelendirilir. Bu tezin amacı, kapalı/zor şiirlerin çevirisindeki bu güçlüğün nasıl aşırı-yorumlamaya, hatta bir sonraki aşamada, açımlamaya neden olabileceğini göstermektir. Bu çalışmada, aşırı-yorumlamaya temellenen bir süreç sergilenmiş ve ortaya çıkan çevirinin hedef dilde yazılmış bir üst-şiire dönüşebileceği öne sürülmüştür. Kapalı/zor bazı şiir örneklerinin ayrıntılı biçimde incelendiği bu çalışmada, aşırı-yorumun şiir çevirisinde neden iyi sonuç veremeyeceği kanıtlanmaya çalışılmıştır.

ABSTRACT Translating poetry, especially that which is cryptic, or“difficult,”is a challenge not lightly taken on by any translator, even those who are poets in their own right. The objective of this thesis is to show how easily the difficulty in interpreting cryptic poetry leads to over- interpretation and explication in the translation. This study attempts to disclose a most unfortunate tendency in our attitude towards translation that has taken most of its impetus from current approaches to interpretation, to show that over-interpretation of a poem will result only in a meta-poem written in the target language, based on the translator's own interpretation of the original. Examples of cryptic poetry are provided, together with instances of over-interpretation. Probable reasons for the latter are analyzed in detail, with the conclusion that the over-interpretation present in poetry translation does not“work”and therefore needs attention. IV
