Özet
KISA ÖZET SKEPTICISM, KAYNAKLARI VE OLASI ÇÖZÜMLER: Bir Wittgenstein ve Quine Karşılaştırması Başak Demet Özonur Descartes tarafından ortaya atılan skeptisizm problemi felsefeciler arasinda büyük bir tartışma konusu olmaya devam etmiştir. Descrates'ın duyuların dış dünya ile ilgili bilgimize sağlam bir temel oluşturmak açısından güvenilir olup olmadığıyla ilgili sorgulamasına farklı tepkiler Wittgenstein' m ve Quine'in teorilerinde de görülebilir. Bu iki felsefecinin düşünüşleri arasında birtakım benzerlikler bulmak mümkündür. Bu benzerlikler her iki düşünürün de skeptik tuzağa düşmekten kaçınmak için“foundationalist”bir epistemoloji anlayışı yerine“naturalist”bir anlayış önermelerinden kaynaldanmaktadır. Wittgenstein ve Quine'in felsefeleri arasındaki bu paralelliğin tersine vardıkları sonuçlar öz itibarı ile birbirlerinden farklıdır. Quine'in“naturalist”epistemolojisi bilginin skeptik probleme rağmen nasıl mümkün olduğunu göstermeyi amaçlarken, Wittgenstein' in teorisi skeptisizm problemini bu problemin hatalı bir formülasyonun sonucunda ortaya çıktığım göstererek eritmeyi hedefler. Bu nedenle, Wittgenstein' m skeptisizm problemi ile ilgili eliştirel görüşleri Quine'in, içinde önemli skeptik öğeler içerdiğine inandığım teorisine de uygulanabilir. îki felsefecinin epistemoloji anlayışları arasındaki bu fark dil ile ilgili açıklamalarında da gözlemlenebilir. Dolayısıyla, bu tezde Quine'in ve Wittgenstein' in skeptisizm problemine tepkileri onların dil teorilerinin karşılaştırılması yoluyla incelenmiştir. iv

ABSTRACT SKEPTICISM, ITS SOURCES AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS: A Comparison of Wittgenstein and Quine Başak Demet Özonur The skeptic challenge which has been introduced into the philosophical arena by Descartes has been and continues to be an issue of great controversy among philosophers. Different responses to Descartes' questioning of the reliability of senses for constituting a firm basis for our knowledge of the world may be found in Wittgenstein's and Quine' s theories. It is possible to find a number of similarities between the thinking of these two philosophers. These similarities stem from the fact that they both propose a naturalist understanding of epistemology against a foundation list one as a means to avoid falling into the skeptic trap. In contrast with this parallel Wittgenstein's and Quine' s conclusions differ essentially from each other. Quine' s naturalist epistemology attempts to show how knowledge is possible despite the skeptic challenge, where as Wittgenstein's theory aims to dissolve the problem of skepticism by showing it to be the result of a misguided formulation. Therefore, Wittgenstein's critical remarks regarding the problem of skepticism may as well be applied to Quine's theory which, I believe, shelters an important element of skeptical thinking. The difference between the epistemological understanding of the two thinkers is also reflected in their accounts of language. Therefore, in this thesis Quine's and Wittgenstein's responses to the skeptical challenge is studied by way of a comparison of their theories of language. m
