Introduction. War provokes, creates, mutilates and destroys. Affects are numerous, extensive, and apparent in all aspects of life. Emotions are intense and reactive... Lives are lost... Hearts are broken. Life-styles are uprooted and confused. Doubt seeps into the Minds of Men, and faith in Nature, Religion and Humanity is questioned. Mans' belief in his ability to shape his own destiny is threatened. Artists, influenced by their environment, times, and society, are likely to react to such disruptions, and their reactions would supposedly be reflected in their work. The aim of this thesis is to study these reactions and reveal the changes that resulted in the nature of British figurative art. Firstly we delve into the history of British figurative art to discover it's course before the War, moving slowly through the beginning of the Twentieth Century to appreciate societal changes and the development of Avant-Garde groups. Later we look at the War and Post-War years, discussing in detail each new development in art, using as examples of change some of Englands most prominent artists of today.
