£11 ABSTRACT Kağızman and its surrounding which constitute our area of investigation take place in Erzurum-Kars District of Eastern Anatolian Region. The oldest formations in the research area around Kötek town, are the graints whichare probably from Paleozoic age. The green stone complexes from Cretaceous age and flyshs of Upper Cretaceous and Eocene age from the other rocks at the base of the researh area. 0 1 i go-Miocene sediments, Plio-Qua- ternary aged basalts, travertine, and aluvial deposits wich take place discordantly on these from the cover formation of the area. Mountainous areas, platoes, hilly places, terraces and aluvial cones and fans form the basic geomorphological units of the research area. It was found that inner and outer pro cesses had been effective in different scales in the forma tions of these units. Some 2195 meters vertical altitute difference, caused an significant change in climate, soil and vegetation in the area of research. In spite of the fact that, mainly continental climatic conditions of Eastern Anatolian Region is seen in the research area, in a more detailed study, it is found that some diffren- ces in climatic elements due to geomorphological chracteris- tics and a local climate with its own characteristics dominan- te especially in lower parts of the investigation area The streams of the area of investigation merge into Cas pian sea drainaged by the Aras River. Dandritic, parallel, subparallel, ortogonal and plaited drainage types developed in accordance with local conditions. The research area which has relativly poor in respect of resources. However resources of the area of investigation vary significantly for their forma tion and water characther 1st ics.IV In relaton with the vertical hight in the area of inves tigation, brown soils, castanozem soils high-mountain-Meadow soils have a respective formulation from lower to higher lati- tutes. Besides, in the study of local characteristics, it has been found that lithosolic soils and alluvial solis and co 1 - luvial soils make a significant distribution. The lowest parts of the research area is within natural step site. In higher parts, though, antropogene steps devoloped as a result of forest destruction. Sub-alpine and alpine mea dows take place over 2600-2700 meter latitutes. The human geography features of Kağızman and its surro undings are characterized by the physical geographical condi tions of the district.
