Özet
ÖZET Toplumsal yaşamda; insanların bir araya gelme ihtiyaç ve isteklerine bağlı olarak gelişen kentsel toplanma-buluşma mekanları, meydanlar; yerleşmelerdeki etkili kamusal mekanlardandır. Meydanlar; konuma-ölçeğe-kamusallık derecesine-işleve bağlı farklılıklar gösterebilmektedir. Bu kentsel mekanlarda, farklı dönemlerin-anlayışlarınn birbirine bağlanması; geleneksel yerleşim özelliklerinde ve mimari kültürlerde sağlanacak sürekliliklerle mümkün olabilecektir. Yapılan çalışma ile, meydanlarla ilgili yapılabilecek yeni uygulamalarda, yenileme-canlandırma çalışmalarında kullanılabilecek tasarım rehberlerine ve belirleyicilerine yönelik bilgilere ulaşılması amaçlanmaktadır. Çalışma, genel bilgilendirmeler, mevcut literatürün incelenmesi-alan çalışması, sonuçlar ve ekler olmak üzere dört bölümden oluşmaktadır. Birinci bölümde; meydan kavramına genel bir bakış yer almakta, yerel kimlik özelliklerinin tespiti, uygulamalara yönelik tasarım rehberlerinin geliştirilebilmesi amaçlan kapsamında izlenen yöntem ve teknikler hakkında bilgiler verilmektedir. Çalışmanın ikinci bölümünde; meydan-meydancık-kentsel avlu-köşeler, mekan öğeleri-bileşenleri, süreç içinde meydan oluşumları, meydan örnekleri ve kentsel tasarım politikaları kapsamında mevcut literatür irdelenmektedir. Araştırma aşamasında; araştırma modeli paralelinde geliştirilen alan çalışması devamında, seçilen meydanlara ait belirlemeler yapılmakta, elde edilen veriler görsel, sayısal analiz yöntemleri kullanılarak değerlendirilmekte, tipolojiler geliştirilmekte, sonuçlar mekan öğe-bileşenlerine ve meydanın bütündeki etkisine bağlı olarak kendi içinde tartışılmaktadır. Üçüncü bölümde çalışmanın tamamına ait sonuçlar verilmekte, öneriler geliştirilmektedir.

SUMMARY Squares in Turkey In social life, the squares which are the urban gathering-meeting places developing with the wishes and neccesity of the people for gathering are one of the effective public places in the settlements. The squares can show different features which depend on the position, scale, degree of publicity and their functions. In these urban places, it will be possible to connect the different periods and understandings to each other by means of the continuity in the conventional settlement properties and architectural culture. In this work, it is aimed to attain information devoted to design guide and design briefs which can be used in the new applications related to squares and in the studies of the renovation and animation. In the first chapter, there exists a general view to the concept of square. Some information is also given on the determination of the local identity properties, and the methods and techniques followed for the scope of the improvement purposes of the design guide devoted to applications. In the second chapter of the work, the current literature is examined in the scope of square-small square-urban courtyard -corners, the elements -components of the places, the formations of the square in the process, the samples of the square, and the urban design policies. In the stage of the resarch, the determinations concerning with selected squares have been done in the continuation of the field study developed parallel to resarch model, the obtained data is evaluated using the visual and numerical analysis methods, some typologies have been developed, and the results have been discussed with respect to the elements-components of the places and the effects on the entire squares. In the third chapter, the results in the whole work have been presented and some proposals have been developed.
