Problemin matematiksel modeline ait temel diferansiyel denklemi kartezyen koordinatlarda aşağıdaki gibidir: V2(£>V2w)-(l-v) rÖ2D d2w ”d2D d2w d2D d2w^ *2 2 + ^ dx2 dy2 dxdy dxdy dy2 dx2, NV2w + ph^- = 0 (2) dt Burada w, v, p, h,t ve N sırasıyla levhanın yer değiştirmesi, Poisson oranı, birim hacminin yoğunluğu, değişken kalınlığı, zaman ve levhanın kenarı boyunca birim uzunluğa etki eden çekme gerilmesidir.

STABILITY AND VIBRATIONS OF ELLIPTICAL PLATES WITH VARIABLE THICKNESS SUMMARY The problem of vibration and stability of plates, which are widely used as main structural components, has attracted attention of researchers for nearly a century. Rectangular and circular plates in particular have been well studied. Plates of various shapes and of non-uniform thickness have also been considered as an interesting topic in the field of continuum mechanics by many researchers for the last several decades. For instance, there have recently been considerable published works on vibration and buckling of elliptical plates with constant thickness, which are commonly used as cover plates for cut-outs in engineering systems. However quite little has been reported for elliptical plates with variable thickness. An ellipse and a rectangle are the two special cases of a geometrical shape defined as a super ellipse. In order to obtain a rounded or curved corner for a rectangular plate, the periphery shape of the plate may be defined by the super elliptical function 2x ya j +.1 = 0, n = l,2,...,oc (1) where a and b are the maximum dimensions of the plate in the x and y directions of the Cartesian coordinate system respectively. It is obvious that the limiting cases of such a function are an ellipse when n=l and a rectangle when n =oc. It can be seen that the comers are rounded automatically as the integer power of n increases. The shape of a circular plate when its natural frequency of transverse vibrations became optimal was determined by Olhoff in 1970, but since then the optimal design of elliptical plates has not been achieved yet. The current parametric study is a step in this direction. It is intended to extend the present work for super elliptical plates in order to be able to apply the resulting techniques to, for example, deck plating of ships or offshore structures. Elastic stability and free vibrations of elliptical plates with parabolically varying thickness are investigated. It is assumed that plates are linearly elastic, homogeneous, isotropic and that they are either simply supported or clamped at the edges. The governing equation of the mathematical model for the problem is given as a differential equation in Cartesian coordinates as follows: V2(£>VV)-(l-i/) d2D d2w“ d2D d2w d2D d2w 2n a2,.A ? + - dx dy dxdy dxdy dy~ dx, ?N72w + ph^- = 0 (2) dt2 where m>, v, p, h, t and N denote the displacement, the Poisson ratio, mass density per unit volume, the variable thickness of the plate, time and uniform boundary tension per unit length of the edge respectively. Also appearing in equation (2) is the flexural rigidity D defined by xviD=Ehzl\2(\-v2) (3) where E is Young's modulus. The non-dimensional variables x = x/a and y = y/b are introduced and simple harmonic motion is assumed where one seeks the solution of the form: w(x,y,t)=w(x,y)eh (4) where co is the natural angular frequency. The plate thickness on the other hand is assumed to vary according to the following relation (one should note that sign plus and sign minus denote the clamped and simply supported cases respectively): h(x,y) = ch0[a±/3(x2+y2)] (5) where ho is the thickness of an elliptic plate with constant thickness, a is a parameter defining the constant part of thickness, /? is the taper parameter controlling the variation of thickness and c is a parameter insuring that all the plates considered are of equal volume defined as: c = 2/(2a±0) (6) Volume of an elliptical plate with constant thickness is nab\ and note that this corresponds to the following which gives volume of an elliptical plate with varying thickness in dimensionless form: V = 4[ i/l-x hfZ h/2 dy ?dx = 4\\\ * h(x,y)dy><fic = 7vch0(a + fi/2) = 7vh0 (7) The flexural rigidity now may be rewritten as: D(x,y)=D0c*H (8) where D0 =Eh3Jl2(\-v2) and H= [a±0(x2 + y2)] Substituting equation (4) and (8) into (2) gives finally: c'UK 43V..,, d4w d4w + 2K2 dx 4 dx2dy2 dy ”-N ^AdH d3w nir2dH d3w + - -) + 2K-_ - - - + 2K2 dx dx c:3 dx dxdy2 + 2K“ - + 2 dy dx dy dy dy dH d'w ^4d2Hd2w ^2d2H d2w ^2d2Hd2w 2 arr2 dx dx dy1 dx' dx2 dy2 xvn+ - K2(\-v) dy2 dy2 d^_d\^_2^H_d^w_ d2H d2w dx2 dy2 dxdy dxdy dy2 dx2 -y{A*cHlpw -YiK ( d2w d2w^ l'”b Kl +. cEz dy1 = 0 (9) where K is the aspect ratio of the plate, A2 = \U* = cob2^ph0/D0 is the frequency parameter and Xb = Nb2/D0 is the critical buckling load parameter. Also appearing in equation (9) are the constants yx and y2 defined as: Y\-\ Yj-® f°r tne fi“ee vibration problem (10a) ^i=0, y2=l for the elastic buckling problem (10b) X, =1, y2=\ for the problem of vibrating plates with in-plane forces (10c) The governing equation can also be expressed in variational form. The total energy functional of a vibrating plate with in-plane uniform compressive load is as follows: f^U-y{T-y2V OD where U is the strain energy due to bending, T is the kinetic energy of the plate considered and V is the potential energy of the in-plane uniform compressive load. These energy expressions and the total energy functional are given below in open form: U 2b \jD«\\c*H< d2w d2w eft2 ~df (K2^ + ^-)2-2(l-v)K' d2w d2w dx2 dy2 dxdy dxdy (12) T= ]-pco2hn\\c[a±(3(x2 + f)]w2(x,y)dxdy (13) V = 2b2 » K' r^,\2 fa...V dw + dw ?dxdy (14) Mf c3H.2d^w + d^w^2 nn..^2 dx2 dy2 (K2^r + ^)2 -2{l-v)K-' d2w d2w dx2 dy2 rd2w^ dxdy -yxX*c[a±p(x2 +y2)\v2 -y2Xb< K: rdw^2 + ^V dxj [dy \vr J ?dxdy (15) xvmBoundary conditions for the simply supported case, i.e. where the edge deflection and the edge moments are zero, are given as: w = 0; Mx=0 andMy=0 (16) For the clamped case condition, the edge deflection remains zero and the slope at the edges are zero as follows: dw dw w = 0; T=0 and - = 0 (17) dx dy Motion is assumed to start with an initial displacement given to the plate. While the differential equation formulation is solved numerically by some weighted residual methods such as collocation, moment and Galerkin methods, the integral equation formulation is only solved by a well-known energy method called Rayleigh- Ritz technique. The method of weighted residuals presumes that a ”trial function“ chosen to approximate an independent variable in a problem, in general, will not satisfy the pertinent governing differential equation. Thus, substitution of the trial function into the governing differential equation will result in a residual denoted by sR. In order to obtain the ”best" solution, one then seeks to minimise the integral of the residuals throughout the region of the problem, i.e. I eR dQ. = minimum (18) One can widen the range of oppurtunities in meeting this objective by requiring that a weighted value of the residual be a minimum throughout the region. The weighting function enables the weighted integral of residuals to achieve a value of zero. Denoting the weighting function by <p, more general form of the above becomes: sR<pdQ. = 0 (19) Q The weighting functions may be chosen in a variety of ways and each choice corresponds to a different criterion in the method of weighted residuals. For instance the weighting functions are chosen to be the same as trial functions in the Galerkin' s method, while the moments of the residual are used as weighting functions in the method of moments. On the other hand in the collocation method the residual itself is fixed to zero in some points of the region. It should be stated here that the method of weighted residuals is only applied to the clamped case in the current study since it is not easy to satisfy the boundary condition of zero edge moment for the simply supported case. The Rayleigh-Ritz technique is used to solve the mathematical model expressed in variational form. It has been possible to produce results for the simply supported case, since the condition of zero edge moment need not be satisfied when using this method. It is well known that in the case of the ellipse this expression is quite complicated, and finding reasonably general functions which would satisfy it would xixbe no easy matter. Furthermore, there is no guarantee that results thus obtained would be any better than those to be found using a three-term deflection function given below: O' w = (x2+y2 -l)(a,+a2x2+a3j72) (20) The deflection function used for the clamped case satisfies both of the boundary conditions, i.e. w = (ai+a2x2+aj2)(x2 + y2 -l)2 (21) A different deflection function is employed when the weighted residual methods are applied, since the Galerkin approach yields results that are identical to those obtained by the Rayleigh-Ritz method. This function is as follows: w = (a, +a2(x2 + y2 -l)+a3(x2 + y2 -l)2\x2 +y2 -l)2 (22) In order to test the accuracy and the validity of the numerical methods used, first free vibration and elastic buckling problem of elliptical and circular plates with constant thickness are solved in turn and the results obtained are compared with the ones found in literature. Plate thickness is considered to be of two different forms suitable for the clamped and simply supported cases respectively and also volume of all the plates are equalised to unity. Therefore for different aspect ratios it has been possible to compare fundamental frequency parameters and critical buckling load parameters of all plates with each other. Then the effect of parabolically varying thickness on fundamental frequency parameter and critical buckling load parameter is investigated. Finally the effect of in-plane forces on free vibrations of circular and elliptical plates with both constant and parabolically varying thickness is searched. Results are usually presented as tables rather than figures so that they can easily be compared with the ones given in the literature. It is concluded that vibration and stability characteristics of elliptical plates can be improved, provided that the shape of the plate is suitably chosen. The outline for this thesis is as follows: In the first section the problem of analysing elliptical plates is introduced, followed by a literature review of related work done in this area; the objectives of this study are then given with an outline of the contents. In the second section the various mathematical models are described in detail including the two approaches from an integral formulation or a differential formulation. In the third section the numerical methods used to solve the model are briefly described. The clamped case is solved, and the results of the parametric investigation are presented in the fourth section. The simply supported case is considered separately in the fifth section. An evaluation and discussion of the results obtained in the previous two sections are made in the sixth section. Finally in the seventh section, some important conclusions of this work are underlined, followed by probable proposals for the future work. xx
