oz KÜRESELLEŞME ÇAĞINDA LİBERAL DEMOKRASİ KRİZİ: MÜZAKERECEİ DEMOKRASİ VERSUS AGONİSTİK DEMOKRASİ Ete, Hatem Yüksek Lisans, Sosyoloji Bölümü Tez Yöneticisi: Doç. Dr. Mesut Yeğen Ocak 2003, 98 sayfa. Bu tez, liberal demokrasinin krizini ve bunun demokrasi teorisinin geleceği üzerindeki etkilerini incelemeyi amaçlıyor. Tez, liberal demokrasi krizinin üstesinden gelmeyi amaçlayan iki alternatif radikal demokrasi modelinin karşılaştırılmasını sağlama amacındadır: Jurgen Habermas'm müzakereci demokrasi modeli ile Ernesto Laclau ve Chantal Mouffe'un agonistik demokrasi modelleri. Amaç, bu iki modelin liberal demokrasi krizine çözüm bulmaktaki maharetlerini sınamaktır. Müzakereci model, iletişim ve uzlaşma üzerindeki ısrarıyla iktidarın toplumsal ilişkileri ve siyasal yaşamı oluşturmadaki rolünü göz ardı ederken, agonistik model, kimlik taleplerinin oluşumunda iktidarın kurucu rolünü vurgulayarak toplumsal ve siyasal yaşamda farklılık ve çatışmanın öneminin altını çizer. Bu yüzden, liberal demokrasi krizine çözüm bulmak ve yeni siyasal durumun taleplerine cevap vermek konusundaki maharetiyle agonistik demokrasi modelinin müzakereci modelden daha üstün olduğu iddia edilecektir.

ABSTRACT THE CRISIS OF LIBERAL DEMOCRACY IN THE AGE OF GLOBALIZATION: DELIBERATIVE VERSUS AGONISTIC DEMOCRACY Ete, Hatem M. Sc, Department of Sociology Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mesut Yeğen December 2002, 98 pages This study aims to analyze the legitimacy crisis of liberal democracy and its implications for the future of democratic theory. The thesis attempts to provide a comparison of two alternative models of radical democracy that aim to overcome the crisis of liberal-democratic politics: the deliberative model of Jurgen Habermas and the agonistic model of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe. The aim is to examine the ability of these two models in coping with the crisis of liberal democracy. I basically argue that the deliberative model fails to recognize the role of power in the constitution of social and political relations. This, I attempt to display, is due to an overemphasis on the categories of communication and consensus. Whereas the agonistic model is marked by its stress on the constitutive role of power in the formation of identity claims and henceforth it underlines the importance of conflict and difference in social and political life. My dissertation ends with the conclusion that the agonistic model of democracy is more capable than the deliberative model in coping with the crisis of liberal democratic politics in the politics of current times.
