THE CHERRY ADLI YAPITLARINDA RABELAIS'DEKİ GROTESK ANLAYIŞI Aktari, Selen Yüksek Lisans, İngiliz Edebiyatı Programı Tez Yöneticisi: Prof Dr. Sevda Çalışkan Aralık 2002, 101 sayfa Bu tez Carson McCullers'ın The Ballad of the Sad Cafe ve Jeanette Winterson'in Sexing the Cherry adlı romanlarında Rabelais 'deki grotesk öğelerin kullanımını karşılaştırmaktadır. Kuramsal çerçeve Mikhail Bakhtin'in Rabelais and His World adlı yapıtına dayanmaktadır. Bu çalışma, iki yazarın da romanlarında, ataerkil toplumun sınırlarım aşmayı ve ortaçağdaki kollektif bilinci yakalamayı amaçladıklarım savunmaktadır. Ancak bu amaç, McCullers'ın hissettiği umutsuzluk ve Winterson'in hissettiği öfkeyle başarısızlığa uğramıştır.

ABSTRACT THE RABELAISIAN GROTESQUE IN CARSON MCCULLERS'S THE BALLAD OF THE SAD CAFİ AND JEANETTE WINTERSON'S SEXJNG THE CHERRY Aktari, Selen M.A., English Literature Supervisor Prof. Dr. Sevda Çalışkan December 2002, 101 pages This thesis is a comparative study of Carson McC tillers 's The Ballad of the Sad Cafe and Jeanette Winterson's Sexing the Cherry in terms of the writers' use of the Rabelaisian grotesque in their novels. The theoretical fiamework is derived from Mikhail Bakhtin's Rabelais and His World. The main argument is that both McCullers and Winterson aim to transgress the boundaries of patriarchal society and try to recover the collective spirit of the medieval times in their novels. However, their aim is frustrated with hopelessness in the case of McCullers and with rage in the case of Winterson.
