Dr. Sevgi AKTÜRE 434 Sayfa, Eylül 1990 ÖZET Bu çalışmada Orta Doğu'daki iki başkentin, Amman ve Ankara'nın tarihsel, sosyal, ekonomik ve fiziksel gelişmesi elde mevcut bilgiler ışığında incelenmiştir. Çalışmanın amacı bu iki yeni başkentin gelişmesinde ve hızlı büyümesinde etkisi olan temel faktörleri anlamak, daha sonra da bugün ve gelecekteki büyümeyi yönlendirecek ve tanımlayacak genel bir çerçeve veya bir hipotez ortaya koymaktır. Amman ve Ankara'da kentleşmenin ve kent ekonomisinin değişim süreci incelendiğinde 1940'lardan sonra göçlerle ortaya çıkan hızlı nüfus artışının her iki başkentde de ekonomik ve fiziksel gelişmesi ve değişmenin temel etmenlerinden biri olduğu görülmektedir. Kentleşme sürecinin erken evreleride her iki başkentte, hızlı nüfus artışının yarattığı işgücü sanayide değil, kamu ve özel hizmet sektöründe istihdam edilmiştir. Her iki metropolitan alanda bazı sanayilerin gelişmesi ise çok yakın bir dönemde ortaya çıkan bir olgudur. Bu sosyo-ekonomik çerçevenin sonucu olan, konut ve ulaşım sorunları Amman ve Ankara'da metropolitan ölçekte gerek kent formunu gerekse ekonomik yapıyı belirlemektedir. Thesis Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sevgi AKTÖRE 434 Pages, September, 1990 ABSTRACT The development and growth of two Middle Eastern cities: Amman and Ankara, the capital cities of Jordan and Turkey respectively, is analyzed in this study using the available data and information on their historical, social, economic, and physical aspects. The aim of this study is to understand the major factors that affected the development and growth of the newly developed capital cities Amman and Ankara, and then to put a general framework or hypothesis that governed and determined their growth today and which will affect their future. The analysis of the changing basis of urbanization and urban economy in cities after 1940 's proved that the very rapid population increase caused by migration is one of the basic forces of economic and physical development and change. Both in Amman and Ankara, the workforce created by rapid population increase rate was absorbed by government and private service sectors not by industry in the previous phases of urbanization process. The development of some industries in both metropolitan areas is rather a recent phenomenon. As a result of this socio-economic framework, housing and transportation issues are determing the metropolitan macroform and economy of the two cities.
