Objective Research results showed that Chlamydia pneumoniae infection is releated with to atherosclerosis. We investigated the presence of these microorganisms in patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy operations and evaluated the significant predictors of Chlamydia pnuemoniae infection on carotid endarterectomy specimens. Methods Twenty patient were observed on whether they were positive or negative in four Chlamydia pneumoniae measures, namely; IgA titers, IgG titers, presence of electron microscopy (EM), and Immunocytochemistry (IHK) in the endarterectomy specimens.Values for possible predictors of Chlamydial measures were also observed on the twenty patients. The percentage of carotid stenosis, chollesterol and triglicerid levels, smoking status, symptomatic or non transient ischemic attack (GIA) or inmee, previous ischemic event, calcification at surgery, ulceration on angiography, ulceration at surgery and hypertension were included in this evaluation. Results Spesific Chlamydia pneumoniae Ig G were detected as positive in 9 (45%) of twenty patient samples. These patients were regarded as having chronic Chlamydia pneumoniae infection. None of the patients were positive for Ig A antibodies. This result demonstrated no evidence of reinfection. 7 (35%) of 20 patients were positively detected by IHK and 34EM. Both IHK and EM were positive in 7 (35%) of twenty specimens and positive serologic results were correlated in these patients. In positive IgG titers with properties of EM positive and IHK positive, significant predictors are found (p<0.05) in previous ischemic event(GIH), calcification at surgery (KALCI), ulceration on angioraphy (U1),and ulceration at surgery (U2). Conclusion The results of this study demonstrated further evidence for an association between Chlamydia pneumoniae with atherosclerosis. Chlamydia pneumoniae infection may exacerbate atherogenesis. The proportion of patients who has positive results for chlamydial measures (IgG titers, EM, and IHK) is significantly higher for those who were positive for each of these predictive variables than who were negative. The patients with positive Chlamydia pneumoniae have significantly higher GIH, KALCI, U1.U2 than those with negative Chlamydia pneumoniae. Who have these predictor factors should be invastigate for Chlamydia pneumoniae infection. We emphesize these significant predictors are indicator for Chlamydia pneumoniae infection. This correlation could be clinical values to diagnosing of Chlamydia pneumoniae infection in carotid stenosis. Key Words. Chlamydia pneumoniae. atherosclerosis. carotid arteries 35
