This dissertation examines the rural settlements of the Olba hinterland in Eastern Rough Cilicia, located between the Kalykadnos (Göksu) and Lamos (Limonlu) rivers, within the boundaries of present-day Silifke and Erdemli in Mersin Province. Focusing on the period from the Hellenistic era to the Middle Byzantine period, the study evaluates these settlements through their spatial, architectural, and topographical relationships. Rather than relying solely on typological classifications, it considers a broader set of parameters, including location, function, accessibility, environmental context, and visual connectivity. In doing so, it moves beyond linear and single-centered models and proposes a multi-centered settlement system structured around shifting spatial focal points over time. Although Eastern Rough Cilicia has a much earlier historical background, the region experienced a significant phase of rural and urban expansion particularly from the Hellenistic period onwards. The mountainous character of the region, defined by narrow coastal plains and rugged inland terrain, played a decisive role in shaping settlement patterns, accessibility, and regional interaction. These geographical conditions created a long-term structural framework that influenced both continuity and transformation in settlement organization throughout the periods examined. The close spatial distribution of settlements in the Olba hinterland, together with observable patterns of continuity, reuse, and partial abandonment, highlights the limitations of unilinear historical models that assume clear chronological breaks. Instead of interpreting the Hellenistic–Roman–Late Antique–Middle Byzantine sequence as a series of distinct phases, this study approaches it as a continuous yet uneven process shaped by the relocation of focal points and the redistribution of economic, social, and administrative functions. Settlement development is therefore understood as a long-term dynamic, influenced both by persistent geographical conditions and by shifting socio-political structures. Within this framework, space is not treated as a passive physical background, but as a multi-layered organizational field shaped by networks of production, circulation, accessibility, and visual interaction. In line with a longue durée perspective, geography is understood as a structuring force that continuously informs settlement organization, while social and economic relations generate shifting spatial hierarchies and connections. This perspective allows settlements to be interpreted as dynamic spatial entities that respond to environmental constraints and opportunities, rather than as static and isolated units. The research was conducted over an area of approximately 33.5 × 27.8 km, using a multi-stage methodology that combines GIS-based spatial analysis with systematic fieldwork. In the first stage, potential settlement areas were identified through orthophoto interpretation and topographic datasets. In the second stage, these data were tested, verified, and expanded through field surveys, resulting in a dataset of more than six hundred recorded locations, a substantial portion of which were confirmed in situ. This process also allowed for the documentation of architectural remains and the refinement of spatial data. In the third stage, spatial analyses were applied to examine relationships between settlements, enabling a more precise evaluation of distribution patterns, accessibility, and interaction networks. Within this process, GIS functioned not merely as a technical tool, but as an integrated analytical environment that supported data production, validation, and interpretation simultaneously. In addition to these analytical processes, the study has produced a comprehensive spatial dataset and mapping framework that aims to represent the full range of rural settlements within the Olba hinterland. This dataset constitutes one of the first attempts to systematically document and visualize all identifiable settlement units in the region within a single integrated map. Rather than focusing on selected sites, the mapping approach adopted here seeks to capture the broader settlement landscape in its entirety, allowing for the identification of spatial patterns, clusters, and relationships that are not visible at the level of individual sites. In this sense, the resulting map is not only a representational tool but also an analytical output that forms a central component of the study's contribution. In order to organize and compare the dataset systematically, a coding system was developed within the GIS framework. In this system,“A”codes represent major central settlements,“B”codes refer to intermediate focal points—primarily sites containing churches that played an active role in structuring the surrounding network—and“C”codes indicate smaller rural units and isolated structures. Additional categories (“GN”and“BN”) were introduced to mark locations that could not be accessed or where archaeological remains were not identified, ensuring transparency in data evaluation. This classification was developed to ensure a systematic organization in data entry and evaluation processes, and is used as an analytical tool that enables the comparative analysis of the spatial and functional characteristics of settlements. The dissertation is structured into four main chapters. The first chapter establishes the conceptual and methodological framework, defines the research questions, and situates the study within existing scholarship. It also emphasizes the limitations of previous research, which has often focused either on individual sites or on typological categorization. In contrast, more recent approaches in rural and Byzantine landscape studies underline the importance of multi-scalar, landscape-based, and relational methodologies. This study contributes to this line of research by integrating spatial analysis with field-based data and by focusing on settlement relationships rather than isolated sites. The second chapter presents the spatial analyses that form the analytical backbone of the study. Proximity analysis reveals clustering tendencies and overlapping zones of interaction, particularly around church-centered settlements. Voronoi analysis suggests the existence of micro-regional territories shaped by topography and spatial distribution. Environmental analyses, including DEM, slope, and aspect, demonstrate that settlements were not randomly located but show clear preferences in relation to elevation ranges, slope thresholds, and directional exposure. Cost surface and least-cost path analyses reconstruct movement patterns and indicate that circulation routes were shaped both by topography and by the spatial organization of settlements themselves. Viewshed analysis further shows that visual relationships were selective and directional rather than uniform. When evaluated together, these analyses reveal a structured and interconnected spatial system shaped by both environmental and relational factors. The transformation of rural settlements in Eastern Rough Cilicia cannot be understood as a sequence of abrupt breaks, but rather as a process of gradual adaptation shaped by both internal dynamics and external pressures. Many settlements established during the Hellenistic period continued to be occupied and reconfigured in Late Antiquity through processes of reuse, spatial reorganization, and functional transformation. This continuity, however, does not imply fixed hierarchy; rather, the roles of settlements shifted over time, reflecting changing priorities related to accessibility, production, and social organization. Building on this analytical foundation, the third chapter examines settlement organization in terms of continuity and transformation, rural structuring, production systems, and centrality. Rather than evaluating settlements as isolated units, the study identifies recurring structural and functional tendencies across the region. These include the persistence of earlier spatial layouts, the integration of new architectural elements into existing settlement fabrics, and the emergence of multi-functional rural nodes where production, storage, and religious activities intersect. The settlement system is defined through the interaction of major centers, intermediate focal points, and smaller rural units, forming a multi-layered and relational network rather than a rigid hierarchy. Central settlements stand out through their scale, architectural density, and regional influence, while intermediate sites—often identified through the presence of churches—function as multi-purpose nodes where production, storage, and circulation were organized. These sites were evaluated not only through their architectural remains but also through their spatial positioning, topographical context, accessibility, and relationships with surrounding settlements. Fieldwork data, including churches, cisterns, production installations, domestic structures, and funerary remains, were analyzed together with spatial data. This integrated approach demonstrates that settlements operated as interconnected components within a broader network rather than as isolated entities. Within this system, certain settlements emerge as dominant nodes due to their topographical control and extended visibility, while others function at a more local scale, linked to production areas and movement corridors. Tower structures and fortified settlements are interpreted not only as defensive elements but as part of a broader regional control system structured through visibility, accessibility, and strategic positioning. The analysis further demonstrates that the Olba hinterland operates as a micro-regional system structured through multiple interacting focal points rather than a single dominant center. These focal points function at different scales and intensities, forming a network of relationships that is both locally grounded and regionally connected. The chronological interpretation of rural settlements remains complex due to the multi-layered nature of the archaeological record. Architectural elements from different periods frequently coexist within the same settlement, making strict chronological distinctions difficult. For this reason, chronology is approached as a relative and interpretative framework based on construction techniques, spatial organization, and contextual relationships. Rural production constitutes a key component of the settlement system. Agricultural activities, particularly olive oil and wine production, are widely attested across the region through installations such as presses and cisterns. These production systems were integrated into wider networks of distribution and exchange, linking inland settlements to coastal routes and broader regional economies. Rural communities therefore functioned not only as local production units but also as active participants in larger economic systems. In this context, the concept of“rural settlement”is approached as a flexible and context-dependent category rather than a fixed typological definition. In Byzantine terminology, different terms such as kome, chorion, and komepolis are used to describe rural and semi-urban settlement forms, yet their meanings vary depending on administrative and textual contexts. While kome generally refers to village-scale settlements associated with local production, and chorion is often used in administrative and fiscal contexts, the concept of komepolis provides a useful framework for understanding intermediate settlements that display both rural and urban characteristics. These settlements do not correspond fully to a polis, yet they exhibit a degree of centrality, functional diversity, and organizational complexity that distinguishes them from smaller rural units. Within the Olba hinterland, such intermediate settlements—particularly those associated with churches and production facilities—can be interpreted as locally central nodes within a wider spatial network. The fourth chapter presents the overall evaluation and conclusions of the study. It demonstrates that rural landscapes in Eastern Rough Cilicia functioned as dynamic and interconnected systems shaped by the interaction of topography, production, circulation, and control. By combining GIS-based spatial analysis with field data, this dissertation proposes a relational and multi-scalar framework for understanding settlement organization. As one of the first large-scale, integrated spatial studies of the Olba hinterland, it fills an important gap in the literature and offers both a methodological model and a conceptual framework for the study of Late Antique and Byzantine rural settlement systems. The methodological approach developed in this study may also be applied to other regions with similar topographical and archaeological characteristics, offering a framework for comparative analyses of rural settlement systems across the eastern Mediterranean.
