The vibration response of slender and low-damped structures under dynamic loads has become an increasingly critical engineering problem in terms of both structural safety and serviceability. In particular, tower-type structures such as high-rise buildings, industrial chimneys, and wind turbines exhibit high sensitivity to wind-, wave-, and earthquake-induced dynamic excitations due to their slender geometry and low structural damping ratios. Under seismic actions, the resulting dynamic demands may lead to damage in structural members and severe safety concerns, whereas vibrations induced by environmental loads such as wind and waves primarily govern serviceability performance, causing reduced occupant comfort, malfunction of sensitive mechanical and electronic equipment, and interruptions in operational performance. Moreover, the long-term cyclic effects of such vibrations may result in fatigue and progressive damage accumulation in structural components. To mitigate these adverse effects, the use of vibration control systems has assumed a critical role in improving structural performance in modern engineering practice. Within this context, Tuned Liquid Column Dampers (TLCDs), which belong to the class of passive vibration control systems, have been widely adopted in practice due to their simple mechanical configuration, low cost, and ability to operate without external energy input. However, passive TLCD systems are designed with fixed parameters corresponding to a specific natural frequency and damping ratio, which restricts their effectiveness to limited loading conditions. Variations in structural dynamic properties over time, as well as differences in the characteristics of dynamic excitations, may lead to insufficient fixed damping capacity, thereby significantly limiting the adaptability of passive TLCD systems. This limitation highlights the need for more flexible and adaptive vibration control approaches, particularly for slender and low-damped structures. The primary objective of this thesis is to develop a new semi-active TLCD system capable of reducing the structural and non-structural damage potential induced by earthquake, wind, and similar dynamic loads, limiting vibration levels that adversely affect occupant comfort, preventing performance degradation of sensitive systems and equipment, and enhancing the overall safety, functionality, and serviceability of structures. To achieve this objective, a semi-active piston TLCD (SP-TLCD) system is developed, mathematically modeled, integrated with a control framework, and experimentally tested under laboratory-scale conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed system is validated by experimental results and further supported through numerical and parametric analyses. The SP-TLCD system incorporates an externally mountable electromagnetic dual-piston braking mechanism that does not require internal structural modification, enables real-time adjustment of damping properties based on the instantaneous structural response and environmental conditions, maintains operational robustness even under partial failure scenarios, and provides control flexibility through both damping-based and force-based operation. To investigate the behavior and effectiveness of the proposed SP-TLCD system, experimental studies were conducted on a laboratory-scale single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) shear frame structure. Prior to the experimental campaign, comprehensive characterization tests were performed for the structural model, TLCD unit, and semiactive piston–brake mechanism, yielding experimentally identified natural frequencies, damping ratios, mass distributions, and hydrodynamic parameters. The fluid motion and energy dissipation behavior within the TLCD were represented using a classical nonlinear head-loss-based modeling approach. In addition, statistically equivalent linear damping ratios were derived to effectively capture the system dynamics in numerical simulations. These parameters were integrated into experimentally validated numerical models, providing a reliable analysis framework. Following the establishment of the experimental and numerical infrastructure, one of the key research topics addressed in this thesis was the role of second-order (P–Δ) effects, which become pronounced in slender and tall structures, on the tuning and vibration mitigation performance of passive TLCD systems. For this purpose, a P–Δsensitive SDOF reference structural model was developed, and free vibration tests conducted under different mass levels experimentally quantified the reduction in effective stiffness and the associated shifts in natural frequency. These findings were confirmed through comparisons with validated numerical models. Accordingly, the optimal liquid column lengths of passive TLCD systems were determined both by considering and neglecting P–Δ effects and shake table experiments were conducted under real earthquake records for both cases. The experimental results demonstrated that TLCDs tuned with consideration of P–Δ effects achieved approximately 15% greater reduction in peak responses and about 30% higher vibration mitigation performance based on RMS metrics compared to TLCDs tuned without accounting for P–Δ effects. Subsequently, the control flexibility and operational robustness of the developed semiactive SP-TLCD system were examined in detail. The system was tested under both damping-based and force-based semi-active control strategies. Moreover, partial actuation scenarios, corresponding to single-piston operation, were experimentally evaluated due to their practical significance. The results showed that even without delay compensation, the SP-TLCD system retained approximately 84% of its vibration mitigation performance relative to the fully actuated configuration, demonstrating operational continuity under potential failure or partial functionality conditions. After establishing the control flexibility and robustness of the system, the vibration mitigation performance of passive and semi-active TLCD systems was comparatively evaluated through shake table experiments under real earthquake records representing near-fault and far-field characteristics. The results indicated that the semi-active system provided average RMS response reductions of approximately 45% and 40% under far-field and near-fault earthquakes, respectively, relative to the uncontrolled structure, with reductions reaching up to 65% for certain records. Compared to the passive system, the semi-active approach yielded maximum improvements exceeding 30% in RMS-based performance metrics, while the average additional vibration reduction was approximately 18% for far-field and 17% for near-fault earthquakes. While a more stable and predictable damping behavior was observed under far-field earthquakes, increased performance dispersion was noted under pulse-type near-fault excitations due to fluid inertia and physical response time limitations. Among the control strategies considered, LQRCC and DBGC exhibited consistent and positive performance even in the presence of time delays, whereas VBGC showed unstable behavior, and BBC and SC provided only limited improvements associated with transient phase alignment within specific delay ranges. In light of these findings, the final stage of the study focused on mitigating performance degradation caused by hardware-induced time delays through the development of delay-compensated feedback control strategies. A genetic algorithmbased controller (GAC) and a genetic algorithm–optimized LQR-based clipping controller (GA-LQRCC) were integrated into the SP-TLCD system and evaluated experimentally and numerically. The results demonstrated that delay compensation provided significant improvements in RMS-based energy reduction, with the GALQRCC approach achieving up to 33% additional improvement in RMS performance compared to the conventional LQRCC. In terms of average values, RMS vibration reduction increased from 18% to 25% for far-field earthquakes and from 14% to 20% for near-fault earthquakes. Overall, this thesis presents a comprehensive investigation covering the design of passive and semi-active TLCD systems, their laboratory-scale experimental implementation, the consideration of second-order (P–Δ) effects, and the development of advanced delay-compensated control strategies. The applicability, reliability, and vibration mitigation effectiveness of the proposed SP-TLCD system are demonstrated through validated experimental and numerical results, showing that it offers a higher and more adaptive vibration reduction capacity compared to conventional passive TLCD systems. With its modular design, external mountability, compatibility with various control strategies, and enhanced control effectiveness, the SP-TLCD system represents a robust and innovative alternative for practical engineering applications.
