Özet

Bu tez çalışmasında, AA6082 alüminyum alaşımının mikroyapısal özellikleri, mekanik dayanımı ve elektriksel iletkenliği üzerindeki etkilerini incelemek amacıyla iki farklı ısıl işlem yöntemi uygulanmıştır. Çalışmanın temel amacı, sanayide yaygın olarak kullanılan AA6082 alaşımının mekanik özellikleri üzerinde ısıl işlem parametrelerinin belirleyici rolünü ortaya koymak ve bu parametrelerin optimizasyonuna yönelik kapsamlı bir değerlendirme sunmaktır. Sanayide biyet olarak tanımlanan hammaddeler bant döküm yöntemiyle üretilmiş, ardından ekstrüzyon yöntemi ile şekillendirilerek çalışmada kullanılan lama profiller elde edilmiştir. Bu süreç, endüstriyel üretim koşullarının laboratuvar ortamında temsil edilmesi açısından önem taşımaktadır. Deneysel çalışmalar kapsamında, farklı iki ısıl işlem yöntemi uygulanmak üzere AA6082 alaşımından toplam 44 adet numune ve aynı sayıda yedek numune hazırlanmıştır. Birinci gruba Retrogression and Re-Aging (RRA) işlemi uygulanmıştır.

AA6082 aluminum alloy is a precipitation-hardenable Al-Mg-Si based alloy, widely recognized for its excellent combination of mechanical strength, formability, and corrosion resistance. These properties make it one of the most widely used members of the 6xxx series, particularly in automotive, aerospace, marine, and structural engineering applications where both high strength and lightweight design are critical. In the literature, AA6082 has often been compared with other alloys in the same series, such as AA6061 and AA6013, and has been shown to offer superior strength and corrosion resistance. This advantage has led to its widespread use in automotive chassis and suspension components, aerospace fuselage panels, and marine structures exposed to aggressive environments. However, the performance of AA6082 is highly dependent on its heat treatment history. The precipitation and redistribution of phases such as β″, β′, and Mg₂Si directly influence the alloy's mechanical and electrical behavior. Therefore, systematic investigation of different heat treatment schedules is essential to optimize the alloy for industrial use. The primary aim of this study is to investigate the effects of different heat treatment parameters applied to AA6082 aluminum alloy on its microstructural features, mechanical strength, and electrical conductivity, and to identify the optimum heat treatment conditions that can provide a balanced strength–conductivity performance. To achieve this, commercial H18 and T6 drawn bars were obtained from the factory, and specimens were divided into two main groups. Heat Treatment Procedures Group 1: Retrogression and Re-Aging (RRA). Specimens initially subjected to T6 conditions were solution-treated at 540 °C for 2 hours. They were then immersed in a 220 °C salt bath for durations of 1, 2, 4, 8, 15, 30, and 60 minutes, followed by quenching to ensure rapid cooling. After retrogression, the specimens were re-aged at 180 °C for 12 hours to stabilize and redistribute precipitate phases. This sequence was designed to partially dissolve Mg₂Si precipitates during retrogression, improve ductility and conductivity, and then restore strength through controlled re-aging. Group 2: Stepwise T6 Treatment. Specimens obtained in H18 condition were solution-treated at 540 °C for 2 hours and quenched. The subsequent stepwise aging consisted of two stages: (i) 90 °C for 7 hours, and (ii) 115 °C for 24 hours. This treatment aimed to produce a dense distribution of fine Mg₂Si precipitates, maximizing hardness and tensile strength, though at the expense of electrical conductivity. Experimental Analyses Following both heat treatment routes, comprehensive experimental analyses were conducted: • Microstructural examinations: Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to observe grain structure, precipitate distribution, and intermetallic phase morphology. • Elemental analysis: Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) was employed to determine the distribution of Al, Mg, Si, Fe, and Mn. • Mechanical characterization: Brinell hardness measurements, tensile tests using a SHIMADZU universal testing machine, and elongation at fracture tests were performed to evaluate strength and ductility. • Electrical conductivity: Measurements were carried out to evaluate the relationship between precipitate dissolution and electron scattering. • Each test was repeated multiple times to minimize experimental error, and the results were statistically analyzed using standard deviation and variance methods to ensure reliability. Microstructural Interpretation Microstructural interpretation focused on the identification, morphology, and redistribution of precipitate phases formed during heat treatment. Particular emphasis was placed on Mg₂Si precipitates, the primary strengthening phase in AA6082 alloys, and Al(Fe,Mn)Si intermetallics retained from casting, which exhibit angular morphologies. In RRA treatment, short retrogression times initiated partial dissolution of Mg₂Si precipitates, leading to a temporary reduction in hardness but improvements in ductility and electrical conductivity. Longer retrogression durations promoted precipitate coarsening and redistribution, balancing strength and conductivity. In contrast, stepwise T6 treatment produced a dense distribution of fine Mg₂Si precipitates, which increased hardness and tensile strength but reduced electrical conductivity. Comparative Evaluation The comparative evaluation of the two heat treatment methods revealed distinct differences in microstructural evolution and property outcomes. Stepwise T6 treatment, with its dense fine Mg₂Si precipitates, significantly enhanced hardness and tensile strength. However, this improvement in strength was accompanied by reduced electrical conductivity due to increased electron scattering. The ductility of T6 specimens remained moderate. In contrast, RRA treatment offered a more versatile balance between strength, ductility, and conductivity. Short retrogression times led to partial dissolution of Mg₂Si precipitates, slightly reducing hardness but improving elongation and conductivity. Longer retrogression durations caused precipitate coarsening and redistribution, reducing strength but further enhancing conductivity. The subsequent re-aging step restored part of the strength by controlled re-precipitation of Mg₂Si. Industrial and Scientific Significance The findings of this thesis provide valuable guidance for optimizing AA6082 aluminum alloy in industrial applications. The comparative evaluation of RRA and T6 treatments demonstrates that heat treatment parameters can be tailored according to the intended application. For automotive and aerospace structures requiring maximum strength, stepwise T6 treatment offers superior performance. Conversely, in electrical and energy-related applications where conductivity is equally important, RRA treatment provides a more favorable balance. This study also emphasizes the importance of microstructural control in alloy design. The redistribution and morphology of precipitate phases directly influence dislocation behavior, fracture mechanisms, and electron scattering. Future Work Future work may investigate the fatigue and creep behavior of RRA-treated AA6082 alloys, which are critical for long-term service in demanding environments. In addition, advanced characterization techniques such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atom probe tomography (APT), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) could provide deeper insights into nanoscale precipitate structures. Hybrid thermo-mechanical treatments or alloying modifications may further enhance the balance between strength and conductivity. Moreover, the development of energy-efficient heat treatment schedules carries significant importance for sustainable manufacturing. In this context, the findings of this study are not only academically relevant but also directly applicable to industrial design and production processes.
