Tezin güncel sanat pratiklerine odaklandığı bölümde, Ludovica De Santis'in Onironautica projesi üzerinden“berrak rüya”(lucid dream) kavramı ele alınmıştır.

The relationship between the art of photography and dreams has not only constituted a significant area of debate regarding representation and subjective experience in the history of photography but has also served as a rich source of inspiration in artistic production practices. This thesis argues that photography moves beyond the traditional acceptance of being merely a tool for documenting the external world; instead, it asserts that photography is one of the most conducive disciplines for reproducing the fragmented, irrational, timeless, and image-dense structure of dreams. Within the scope of this study, this symbiotic relationship between dreams and photography is examined through a historical perspective extending from the Surrealist era to the present, in the light of neurocognitive, psychoanalytic, and phenomenological theories. The historical framework of the thesis is grounded in the Surrealist movement, which progressed in parallel with the rise of psychoanalysis. During this period, dreams were accepted as the uncensored expression of the unconscious; Maurice Tabard's solarization and double exposure techniques, and Grete Stern's photomontages in the Sueños (Dreams) series, are analyzed as pioneering examples that visualize the“uncanny”atmosphere and symbolic language of dreams. The study emphasizes that these techniques were not merely formal experiments but were photographic equivalents of dream mechanics (condensation and displacement). In contemporary photographic art, it is observed that the theme of dreams gains conceptual and narrative depth, moving beyond technical manipulation. Ralph Gibson's use of the dream self and“somnambulist”aesthetics in The Somnambulist series, the sequential narrative structure in Duane Michals' Things Are Queer, the multi-layered collage aesthetics in Bea Nettles' Dream Pages, the memory/dream fluidity in Masao Yamamoto's Nakazora project, and the uncanny fictions in Lieko Shiga's Canary series are examined as examples representing the cyclical nature of dreams, the splitting of the self, and the disruption of the perception of reality. In the section focusing on current art practices, the concept of the“lucid dream”is discussed through Ludovica De Santis' Onironautica project. This project is significant as it symbolizes the photographer's transition from a passive subject dreaming to a creator who consciously constructs images, just as in a lucid dream. Within the scope of this thesis, it is argued that, besides being a tool representing the dream experience, the layered structure of the dreaming mind bears structural similarities to the layers of photography. The camera and the mind meet on common ground in terms of constructing, fragmenting, and reconstructing reality; this renders photography a powerful ontological tool in the search for the“second self”and the visualization of the unconscious.
