This study presents an automated, Python-based workflow that integrates multiple computational tools for transonic axial compressor shape optimization. The developed methodology goes beyond the classical design approaches commonly used in tur-bomachinery by combining modern computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques with parametric geometry definition methods. The workflow created within the scope of this research offers an integrated framework covering all processes from the initial geometry to the final optimized design. In the first stage of the methodology, an in-house code developed for three-dimensional airfoil design is utilized to generate the baseline geometry. The baseline geometries consist of multiple-circular-arc (MCA) airfoil profiles, which are commonly found in high-speed compressor applications due to their well-established aerodynamic charac-teristics and manufacturing advantages. These conventional profiles serve as robust starting points for the optimization process, as they incorporate decades of empirical knowledge in transonic compressor design. Following the geometry definition phase, the computational domain is discretized us-ing industry-standard mesh generation tools such as Autogrid or Turbogrid. These commercial software packages are specifically designed for turbomachinery applica-tions and provide high-quality structured grids that accurately capture the complex three-dimensional flow features present in transonic compressor environments. The mesh generation process is automated through Python scripts, which control all pre-processing steps including domain decomposition, boundary condition specification, and grid quality verification. This automation ensures consistency across multiple de-sign iterations. Once the computational mesh is generated, a crucial step in the workflow involves blade-matching the geometry using ParaBlade software. This CAD-based parametriza-tion tool establishes a precise mathematical connection between the physical blade sur-face and the computational mesh nodes. The blade-matching process creates a para-metric representation of the airfoil geometry using spline-based curves and surfaces, which enables smooth and controlled shape modifications during the optimization pro-cess. ParaBlade's ability to maintain geometric continuity (G2 continuity) ensures that the optimized shapes remain physically realizable and suitable for manufacturing. The parametric model captures key geometric features such as leading edge radius, trailing edge thickness, camber distribution, and thickness distribution, all of which can be independently controlled during optimization. The computational mesh, now linked to the parametric CAD model, serves as the pri-mary input for the SU2 open-source CFD suite, where the core shape optimization is performed. SU2 employs the adjoint method combined with gradient-based optimiza-tion algorithms to efficiently determine the sensitivity of aerodynamic performance metrics with respect to design variables. The adjoint approach represents a significant advancement over traditional finite-difference sensitivity analysis methods, as it com-putes gradients with a computational cost independent of the number of design pa-rameters, requiring only one additional adjoint solution alongside the primal flow solu-tion. This computational efficiency is particularly valuable in turbomachinery optimiza-tion, where it enables the use of rich parametric representations without prohibitive computational overhead. The optimization framework utilizes mesh deformation techniques implemented within SU2's mesh adaptation module to propagate surface modifications throughout the en-tire computational domain. The mesh deformation algorithm, based on linear elasticity analogies, ensures that mesh quality is preserved during the optimization iterations, preventing element distortion or negative volumes that could compromise solution ac-curacy. A wall-distance-based stiffness distribution is employed to protect near-wall boundary layer cells from excessive deformation while allowing the interior mesh ele-ments to accommodate geometric changes. T The gradient-based optimization approach, empowered by the adjoint method, enables the exploration of large design spaces while maintaining computational tractability. The sensitivity information derived from the adjoint solution guides the optimizer toward improved designs by identifying which geometric modifications will most effectively enhance the objective function. In this study, isentropic efficiency is selected as the primary objective. The optimization process also respects geometric constraints inher-ent to the mesh deformation approach, such as bounds on design variable perturbations to prevent mesh quality degradation. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are solved using the Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model, which has been validated extensively for turbomachinery applications. The adjoint solver in SU2 is consistent with the turbu-lence model, meaning that the sensitivity calculations account for the influence of tur-bulence on the flow field and performance metrics. This consistency between the pri-mal and adjoint solutions ensures that the computed gradients accurately reflect the true design sensitivities. The three-dimensional nature of transonic compressor flows presents additional chal-lenges that are addressed within the optimization framework. Radial variations in flow properties, tip clearance flows, hub and casing boundary layers, and endwall second-ary flows all contribute to the overall loss generation and performance characteristics. The parametric representation provided by ParaBlade allows for independent control of blade geometry at different spanwise locations, enabling the optimizer to tailor the airfoil shape along the blade span to account for these radial variations. In this study, two three-dimensional stacking parameters are investigated: sweep (axial repositioning of blade sections) and lean (tangential repositioning), both of which influence the shock structure and secondary flow development along the blade span. The hub and tip sections are held fixed to preserve mesh quality in the endwall regions, while the intermediate sections are optimized to achieve improved aerodynamic performance. The automated framework demonstrates significant advantages in terms of computa-tional efficiency and design flexibility compared to conventional optimization ap-proaches. By eliminating manual intervention between design iterations, the workflow can execute continuously, allowing design engineers to explore multiple design vari-ants and optimization strategies with minimal effort. This comprehensive workflow represents a modern approach to turbomachinery de-sign, where shape optimization is seamlessly incorporated into the design process to enhance aerodynamic performance while maintaining reasonable computational costs. The methodology presented in this thesis provides a foundation for advanced compres-sor design studies and demonstrates the practical implementation of adjoint-based op-timization techniques in transonic turbomachinery applications. The methodology is demonstrated on the NASA Rotor 37 transonic axial compressor, which serves as a widely recognized benchmark in the turbomachinery research community. This test case features a design pressure ratio of 2.05 with rotor tip relative Mach numbers ex-ceeding unity, making it representative of modern high-pressure compressor front stag-es where shock structures and shock-boundary layer interactions dominate the loss generation mechanisms. The computational model is validated against experimental measurements available in the literature, ensuring the reliability of the numerical pre-dictions throughout the optimization process. The total sensitivity required by the optimizer is assembled through a chain rule involv-ing three distinct contributions: the surface sensitivity computed by ParaBlade, the mesh sensitivity obtained from SU2's mesh deformation module (SU2_DOT_AD), and the adjoint sensitivity derived from the discrete adjoint solver (SU2_CFD_AD). The surface sensitivity quantifies how the blade surface coordinates change with re-spect to each design variable perturbation, and it is computed using the complex step method. This approach offers superior numerical accuracy compared to conventional finite difference schemes, as it avoids cancellation errors that arise when subtracting nearly equal floating-point numbers at small perturbation steps. The mesh sensitivity maps the propagation of surface displacements to the volumetric grid nodes, while the adjoint sensitivity captures the influence of the entire flow field on the objective func-tion. The product of these three components yields the total gradient vector that guides the optimizer. The optimization problem is formulated to minimize the non-dimensional entropy gen-eration, which serves as a direct measure of aerodynamic losses. The Sequential Least Squares Programming (SLSQP) algorithm from the SciPy library is employed as the gradient-based optimizer, with bound constraints imposed on each design variable to prevent excessive mesh deformation. Two separate optimization configurations are investigated: a lean optimization with 5 design variables controlling the tangential re-positioning of blade sections, and a sweep optimization with 10 design variables gov-erning the axial leading and trailing edge positions at five active spanwise stations. The optimization results demonstrate physically meaningful improvements in aerody-namic performance. The lean configuration achieves an isentropic efficiency improve-ment of approximately 0.19 percentage points at nearly identical pressure ratio and mass flow conditions. The lean optimization redistributes the radial loading, reducing entropy losses in the tip region through favorable modification of secondary flows and shock-boundary layer interaction. The sweep configuration yields a more significant efficiency gain of approximately 0.48 percentage points, primarily by introducing for-ward sweep characteristics that reduce the effective Mach number in the hub region, thereby weakening the passage shock and lowering the associated losses. Although the sweep optimization results in a slight reduction in pressure ratio and mass flow rate, the net efficiency benefit is substantial. The performance evaluation employs mixed-out averaged quantities computed at the inlet and outlet boundaries using SU2's turbomachinery module. Spanwise distribu-tions of entropy loss coefficient, isentropic efficiency, and outlet flow angle are ana-lyzed at multiple radial stations to identify the physical mechanisms responsible for the observed improvements. Additionally, blade loading distributions at 10%, 50%, and 90% span positions are examined to assess the local aerodynamic effects of the geo-metric modifications. The framework's modular architecture, where all steps from geometry generation through mesh deformation, flow solution, adjoint computation, sensitivity assembly, and design variable update are orchestrated through Python scripts, enables rapid ex-ploration of different optimization strategies. Initiating a new optimization study re-quires only the modification of design variable selections and bound definitions, signif-icantly reducing the engineering effort associated with parametric studies. This work provides a foundation for future investigations that may incorporate mesh regeneration approaches to expand the achievable design space beyond the current limitations im-posed by mesh deformation, potentially enabling the optimization of hub and shroud contours alongside the blade geometry.
