Vibration suppression in high-rise buildings is of critical importance for maintaining structural safety and occupant comfort by reducing the vibrations induced by dynamic loads such as earthquakes and wind. Such structures are more sensitive to resonance effects and excessive displacements due to their large masses and low natural frequencies. The use of an effective damping system not only reduces the risk of structural damage but also enhances the service life and overall safety of the structure. The damping systems employed in the vibration control of high-rise buildings are generally categorized into three main groups: base isolators, energy dissipators, and dynamic vibration absorbers. Base isolators partially decouple the structure or its load-bearing elements from ground motions, preventing the direct transmission of earthquake effects to the upper portions of the structure. These systems significantly reduce the horizontal forces acting on the building by dissipating vibrations at the base level, thereby minimizing the risk of earthquake-induced damage. Energy dissipators, on the other hand, convert part of the seismic energy transmitted to the structure into heat and distribute the remaining energy to various parts of the structure, thereby reducing the concentration of energy. Typically placed at the inter-story connections of buildings, these systems are classified into four main types: frictional, metallic, viscous, and viscoelastic dampers. Dynamic vibration absorbers consist of an additional mass, spring, and damping element attached to the main structure. In such systems, the vibration energy of the structure is transferred to the damping component, thereby mitigating structural damage. These absorbers can be integrated into existing structures and provide high damping performance near resonance frequencies. Dynamic vibration absorbers are divided into two main subgroups. When the auxiliary mass is a solid body, they are referred to as tuned mass dampers (TMDs), whereas when the auxiliary mass is in the liquid phase, they are termed tuned liquid dampers (TLDs). TLD systems are further classified into two subtypes: tuned sloshing dampers (TSDs), in which the damping is achieved by the free-surface motion of the liquid, and tuned liquid column dampers (TLCDs), in which damping occurs through the oscillatory motion of the liquid column within a U-shaped tube. When a TLCD is applied to a structure, the vibration amplitude in the resonance region is significantly reduced. However, the inclusion of a TLCD increases the degrees of freedom of the system, leading to the emergence of new natural frequencies. In the frequency bands near these new natural frequencies, the presence of the TLCD may cause amplification of vibration amplitudes. To take advantage of the beneficial effects of the TLCD near the primary resonance region while minimizing its negative effects around the newly introduced frequencies with minimal energy consumption, semi-active controlled TLCDs are utilized. In this thesis, a novel semi-active controlled TLCD, designed for the vibration suppression of high-rise buildings under seismic excitation, has been comprehensively investigated. This semi-active system, termed the semi-active piston tuned liquid column damper (SP-TLCD), incorporates floating pistons inside its vertical columns. These pistons are connected to piston rods made of ferromagnetic material, the opposite ends of which are vertically supported within a magnetic brake mechanism. The magnetic brake consists of a magnetic core and a coil assembly. When an electric current passes through the coil, the magnetic core becomes magnetized and generates an attractive force with the piston rod. This interaction produces a frictional force that is controllable via the applied current. During the upward motion of the TLCD fluid, this controllable friction force allows the piston to regulate the fluid motion, thereby achieving semi-active damping. The aim of this study is to experimentally examine the SP-TLCD, to identify its functional operating conditions, and to develop a system model that aligns with experimental data while remaining within defined boundaries. To this end, the equations of motion for the TLCD, SP-TLCD, structure system, TLCD-structure system, and SP-TLCD-structure system were first derived. As these coupled nonlinear equations are not analytically solvable, a numerical solution algorithm was developed using the fourth-order Runge–Kutta (RK4) method. The validity of the numerical model developed in MATLAB software was confirmed using a block-diagram model constructed in MATLAB/Simulink toolbox. Subsequently, experimental investigations were conducted. A single-story structural model dynamically equivalent to a 72 m, 25-story building was fabricated. A TLCD compatible with this structure and a corresponding magnetic brake mechanism were then manufactured, and the assembly of these components yielded the SP-TLCD prototype. In all systems, the equality of natural frequencies between the structure, TLCD, and SP-TLCD was ensured, and the total system mass was kept constant by redistributing a portion of the structural mass to the damper. The experiments were carried out using a six-degree-of-freedom shaking table. The ground acceleration, displacement of structure, TLCD liquid level, and SP-TLCD piston displacement were measured and recorded in real time through a data acquisition system. The experiments were conducted in two groups. In the first group, TLCDs with three different liquid lengths were tested under harmonic base excitations of various amplitudes near the resonance frequency. The dynamic behavior of the TLCD liquid was analyzed under these harmonic excitations. The investigation focused on the relationship between the viscous loss coefficient—an essential parameter for both TLCD and SP-TLCD applications and the system and excitation parameters. It was observed that the viscous loss coefficient depends on excitation frequency but is largely independent of excitation amplitude. Based on dimensionless numbers, a correlation for the viscous loss coefficient was derived, and numerical results based on this correlation showed an average relative error of approximately 3% compared to experimental data. The findings of the first experimental group also provided insight into the determination of the viscous loss coefficient used in the motion equation of the SP-TLCD structure system. In the second group of experiments, the dynamic responses of the structure, TLCD-structure, and SP-TLCD-structure systems were examined under various excitations, including free vibration, forced vibration under white-noise excitation, and seismic excitations. For the SP TLCD-structure system, a constant electric current was applied to the coils of the magnetic brake to investigate the current-dependent semi-active control behavior. Eleven current levels, ranging from 0 A to 0.50 A in equal increments, were tested. For each current level, the free vibration, white-noise excitation, and earthquake excitation responses were individually evaluated. The earthquake excitations were selected to represent realistic seismic inputs, using recorded ground motions from the Landers (1992), the Northridge (1994), the Kocaeli (1999), the Manjil-Rudbar (1990) and the Kobe (1995) earthquakes. These acceleration records were scaled according to the physical limits of the shaking table and applied at both full-scale and half-scale amplitudes to prevent potential damage to the experimental setup. The secondary experimental study consisted of two main parts. In the first part, which consists of the evaluation of the free-vibration tests and the full-scale white-noise excitation tests, the operating points at which the SP-TLCD is functional were identified, and the dynamic and static operating regions of the piston within the SP-TLCD were determined for different current levels. It was observed that, in free vibration tests, the TLCD initially provides effective damping, but the kinetic energy stored in the liquid subsequently re-excites the structure. Applying current to the SP-TLCD just before this re-excitation was shown to suppress this effect, yielding more stable damping performance. Frequency response analysis under white-noise excitation further revealed that current application can mitigate the amplitude increase occurring near the new natural frequencies introduced by the TLCD. Moreover, the excitation accelerations required to activate piston motion at different current levels were determined from free vibration tests, providing a simple yet novel method for defining the dynamic and static operating regions of the SP-TLCD. In the second part, a comprehensive system model was developed for the SP-TLCD-structure system covering the tested current levels. The viscous loss coefficient was determined from the full-scale white-noise test at 0 A. The maximum values of the linear stiffness and damping terms present in the model were identified from the full-scale white-noise tests at 11 current levels. Subsequently, an appropriate weighting factor was introduced to adjust these maximum values based on full-scale seismic experiments using the Landers (1992), the Northridge (1994), and the Kocaeli (1999) earthquakes records. The model was then validated using the full-scale Manjil–Rudbar (1990) and Kobe (1995) earthquakes records, which were not included in the model development phase. The comparison between numerical and experimental results under full-scale seismic excitations showed mean relative errors of about 2% for RMS and 1% for maximum values. For half scale excitations, the corresponding mean relative errors were about 12% (RMS) and 4.5% (maximum), indicating that the SP-TLCD-structure system and the developed model are sensitive to acceleration scaling. However, this sensitivity caused only acceptable deviations in maximum displacements of the structure, which are critical for damage assessment. It was further shown that calibrating the system model using excitation amplitudes corresponding to the structural damage threshold can enable accurate modeling of SP-TLCD behavior under risk level accelerations, allowing improved performance in future semi-active control applications. In addition, by separately evaluating the relative errors between the numerical results obtained from the system model and the experimental results for the full-scale and half-scale forced vibrations of the SP-TLCD-structure system under the 0 A condition, the sensitivity of both the viscous loss coefficient and the semi-active force to the ground acceleration amplitude was determined. Accordingly, it was found that the assumption of the semi-active force being independent of the excitation amplitude leads to larger errors compared to the assumption that the viscous loss coefficient is independent of the excitation amplitude. This finding demonstrates that the semi-active force, which governs the current-controlled operation of the semi-active damper, is significantly more sensitive to variations in ground acceleration amplitude. In conclusion, the semi-active TLCD investigated in this study has been demonstrated to be functional, and a system model consistent with the experimental data has been developed. The proposed model presents an innovative approach distinct from those found in previous studies on semi-active controlled TLCDs. The strong agreement between experimental and numerical results indicates that the developed system model can serve as a reliable and practical reference for the design of control strategies for SP-TLCD-structure systems. Regarding the limitations and possible future work, the experimental study was conducted on a single-story structural model. Extending the application of the SP-TLCD to multi-story structures would enable more comprehensive evaluations related to real-world implementations. Furthermore, while the system model was developed in this study, active control implementation was not performed. In future research, optimal control strategies can be formulated using the established system model, and energy optimization can be achieved by considering both dynamic and static acceleration regions of the structure.
